Vandavasi, Tiruvannamalai

Vandavasi, formerly known as Wandiwash, is a major town and a municipality in the Tiruvannamalai district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town is well known in the Carnatic history for the Battle of Wandiwash. Vandavasi town is also the largest manufacturer of kora artefacts including mats, shawls and vessels.

History of Vandavasi

Vandavasi has a long and rich history, dating back to the Sangam period in the 3rd century BCE. The town was later ruled by the Chola dynasty, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Nayakas of Madurai, and the Carnatic Maratha kingdom. In the 18th century, Vandavasi came under British rule.

Battle of Wandiwash

The Battle of Wandiwash was a decisive battle in the 18th century Carnatic Wars between France and the British Empire for control over south Asia. The battle was fought on 22 January 1760, near Vandavasi in the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu. The British, led by Colonel Eyre Coote, defeated the French, led by the Marquis de Bussy-Castelnau. The battle was a turning point in the Carnatic Wars and cemented British supremacy in India.
