Evolution of State Express Transport Corporation Ltd
Formation and Early Years
In 1975, the government of Tamil Nadu envisioned a dedicated corporation for long-distance express services connecting the state’s district headquarters to Chennai.
Consequently, the express services operated by the erstwhile Tamil Nadu State Transport Department were shifted to the express wing of Pallavan Transport Corporation on September 15, 1975.
This wing was officially registered as Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation on January 14, 1980.
Bifurcation and Renaming
Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation underwent a bifurcation on January 27, 1994, forming a new corporation exclusively for inter-state operations named P.T. Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Transport Corporation.
Subsequently, on May 21, 1996, this corporation was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Transport Corporation.
Simultaneously, Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation became State Express Transport Corporation (Tamil Nadu Division I) on July 17, 1997, and Rajiv Gandhi Transport Corporation became State Express Transport Corporation (Tamil Nadu Division II) on July 30, 1997.
Amalgamation and Present Status
State Express Transport Corporation (Tamil Nadu Division II) merged with State Express Transport Corporation (Tamil Nadu Division I) on February 7, 2002.
Currently, the amalgamated entity operates as “State Express Transport Corporation Tamil Nadu Limited” with a fleet strength of over 1,100 buses.
Service Offerings and Operations
The corporation operates long-distance express services connecting Tamil Nadu’s significant cities, historical, religious, and commercial places, extending to neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry. Its services include various types of buses such as AC Sleeper, Non-AC Sleeper, AC Sleeper Seater, Deluxe, Ultra Deluxe, and Ultra Deluxe with Toilet Buses.
