Katpadi, Vellore

Katpadi is a town and municipality in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on the banks of the Palar River, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Vellore, the district headquarters.

Location

Katpadi is located in the northern part of Tamil Nadu, at an elevation of 100 meters (330 feet) above sea level. The town is surrounded by agricultural fields, mainly cultivated with rice and sugarcane.

History

Katpadi has a long history dating back to the Chola dynasty. The town is mentioned in several ancient Tamil texts, including the Sangam literature.

In the 10th century CE, the Chola king, Rajaraja I, built the Katpadi Siva Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is one of the most important temples in the town.
